A week or so ago, emailer Alison Maynard was, in a similar way to me, doing a bit of undercarriage-rifling under a very large and beautiful white-flowered rhododendron, and was slightly alarmed when, grabbing hold of what seemed like a bit of superfluous twiggery, she inadvertently ripped up a branch that had some roots on it. So she severed it from the parent branch, snipped off the lanky, leafy shoot tip, and shoved the rooty remains into a pot of compost. What next, she asked me. Her brother, who always admired this particular rhododendron, would love one. Will her new, free "plant" live?
